Many modern split air-conditioning systems work as heat pumps: they move heat rather than create it directly, so the same system can provide cooling in warm weather and heating when it is cooler. Whether it is the right way to heat a particular room depends on how you use the home, the equipment chosen and the space that needs conditioning. It can be used for year-round room comfort, but do not assume one wall unit will heat every room in a house.
Think about the rooms where temperature matters most. A bedroom used overnight, a garden room in the evening or a south-facing living space may have different use patterns. A single-room installation has one indoor unit; a multi-room setup can use several indoor units connected to outdoor equipment, subject to the system design. Sizing the system around each room
Room size is only one part of selecting an air conditioner. Window area, direct sun, ceiling height, insulation, room shape, occupancy and heat-producing appliances can influence the cooling demand. The calculator's small, medium and large categories are useful for an initial estimate, not a detailed heat-load calculation. If you are between sizes, provide your best estimate and mention any unusual features when the layout is reviewed.

Larger is not always better: an oversized system can cycle differently and may not give the comfort you want. The installer checks the room and the manufacturer's data before recommending the final indoor and outdoor unit combination.
Indoor and outdoor unit positions
The indoor unit needs a position that can distribute air across the room without making the seating or bed uncomfortable. It also needs a practical route for refrigerant pipework, power and condensate drainage. We will discuss where the unit could sit and what visible pipe covers may be needed. A neat installation is usually the result of agreeing these routes before work begins.
The outdoor unit needs an accessible place with adequate airflow and a suitable base or support. The calculator asks whether it can go on the ground, at ground level on a wall or on a flat roof; garden-room projects have their own illustrated choices. Noise, clearance, access for future servicing, condensate and the route back to the indoor unit all need consideration. Permission or other restrictions may apply in some properties, so raise any concerns early.
Electrical work and the estimate
The cost of electrical work can depend on the total equipment capacity, cable route, circuit access and what is already present in the home. Your calculator treats systems at 3.5 kW or less without an additional electrical-work estimate. When the selected system is over 3.5 kW, a separate estimated electrical cost is shown above the standard price and is subject to a site survey. It is an estimate rather than a confirmed electrical quote.
That separate line makes the uncertainty visible before you share your details. The survey is used to check the proposed route, cable size and connection requirements and to agree any confirmed electrical work. Do not assume the estimate covers every house or cable route. Before booking, ask which parts are included in the base installation, what the estimated electrical line covers and how a change after survey would be agreed.
