Signs the condensate pipe may be frozen
A boiler that stops during a spell of freezing weather, makes an unusual gurgling noise while trying to start or shows a fault code may have a blocked condensate drain. On many installations, a plastic pipe runs from the boiler to a drain, with some section outside. The colour and route vary, so check the boiler manual or a manufacturer’s diagram. Do not touch any pipe if you are not sure what it is.
A frozen condensate pipe is only one possible cause of a boiler fault. Do not assume it is the problem just because it is cold outside. Write down the boiler display code and follow the manufacturer’s troubleshooting advice.
Safe steps for a pipe you can reach from the ground
- Find the pipe safely. Look for the plastic condensate pipe leaving the boiler and leading to a drain. Do not remove the boiler casing or disconnect the pipe.
- Check access and footing. Only attempt to warm a section that is easy to reach from ground level. Do not climb a ladder or lean from a window. Avoid spilling water where it can freeze underfoot.
- Warm the suspected icy section. Use warm—not boiling—water poured carefully over the accessible pipe, or hold a hot-water bottle or heat pack against it. Protect your hands and keep water away from the boiler and electrical equipment.
- Allow the blockage to clear. Repeat gently if needed and let the pipe drain. Do not use a naked flame, blowtorch, heat gun or boiling kettle water.
- Restart only as the manual says. Once the pipe appears clear, use the reset procedure for the exact boiler model. If the boiler does not restart, stop and call an engineer.
When to call an engineer
Call for help if the pipe is high up, concealed, damaged or difficult to identify; if the boiler still shows a fault after thawing; or if the pipe freezes repeatedly. Can I use boiling water?
