How to reset your boiler

First, check what the boiler is telling you

Write down the exact code or message before doing anything. Check the user manual for its meaning; similar-looking codes can mean different things on different boilers. You can make basic checks at the normal controls, such as whether the programmer is set to call for heat and whether the boiler display is on. Do not remove the casing, touch wiring, adjust gas controls or try to clear a fault you do not understand.

If the appliance is leaking, smells of gas, has scorching or unusual staining, or a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, do not reset it. Leave it off and get appropriate help. If you smell gas, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 and follow HSE emergency advice.

Reset steps for the boilers we fit

These steps are for the named boiler ranges, not every boiler made by each brand. Check the model label or paperwork first: a similar-looking fascia can use different controls.

Ideal Logic MAX Combi

1. If the display shows an ignition lockout and offers Restart, select that on-screen prompt once.
2. Allow the boiler to run through its ignition sequence and check whether the fault clears.
3. If it fails to light or the fault returns, stop and contact a Gas Safe registered engineer. Do not keep pressing Restart.

Ideal Vogue MAX Combi

1. Read the fault message and the action shown on the boiler’s LCD.
2. Follow the display’s instruction once. If it reports Too Many Restarts, do not continue resetting it: Ideal recommends that a suitably qualified service engineer checks the boiler.
3. If the fault remains, note the message and arrange an engineer visit.

Worcester Bosch Greenstar 4000 Combi or System

1. Read and note the fault code on the display.
2. Use the up and down buttons until Reset appears.
3. The Greenstar 4000 restarts and shows the current flow temperature. If the same fault persists, contact your installer and give them the code.

Vaillant ecoTEC plus Combi or System

1. On the current ecoTEC plus control panel, find the power/standby button, which also serves as the reset control.
2. Press and hold it for more than three seconds to restart the boiler.
3. If the fault remains or appears again, stop and call an engineer. Share the displayed fault code.

Baxi 816, 825 or 830 Combi; Baxi 415, 418 or 424 Heat

Match the reset method to the controls on your boiler. Baxi documents three fascia types, so do not assume every 800 Combi or 400 Heat has the same reset control:

• Dedicated reset button: press it until the red lockout light goes out.
• ON/OFF/selector switch: turn the selector to R (Reset), hold for at least five seconds, then release.
• Thermostat control knob: turn the temperature knob fully anticlockwise and hold it until the red lockout light goes out, then return it to the previous setting.

If your fascia does not clearly match one of these, check the manual for that exact Baxi model. If lockout happens again, stop and contact an engineer. Baxi reset instructions · Baxi user guides.

If the fault comes back

Stop after a reset fails or the same fault returns. Repeated lockouts can indicate a problem that a reset will not fix. Contact a Gas Safe registered engineer and share the boiler make and model, the exact display code, when it happens, and whether you have already tried the reset. This makes it easier to decide what checks or parts may be needed.

If you are unsure which reset instruction applies, use the boiler’s model-specific manual or arrange help. Do not remove the casing or attempt internal repairs.
